About Politics Meridian: Mission, Perspective and Editorial Team
Learn about Politics Meridian, a publication explaining global affairs in plain English with Türkiye's official perspective and full source transparency.
Why It Matters
PoliticsMeridian.com is an English-language analysis publication that explains global and regional affairs in plain language while presenting Türkiye's official doctrines, legal theses and historical record to an international audience. It matters because it states its perspective openly instead of hiding it: Turkish government positions are labelled, attributed to primary sources and kept apart from neutral background. Readers can see what is documented fact, what Ankara argues, and what other governments say in their own words.
Who We Are: Publisher Identity
The publisher is Politics Meridian, operating at politicsmeridian.com. The publication exists to do two things:
- Explain developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Black Sea, Cyprus, the Middle East and wider international politics in accessible, analytical English.
- Present Türkiye's official policy, legal arguments and archival evidence directly to international readers, particularly on subjects where mainstream coverage is incomplete or compressed.
We are not a neutral wire service, and we do not pretend to be. We are a perspective-driven publication that commits to transparency about that perspective. For the home page and the full range of coverage, see Politics Meridian: Global Politics Read from Türkiye's Longitude.
The Meridian Metaphor
A meridian is a line of longitude: a fixed reference from which positions are measured. Politics Meridian uses that idea to read world politics from a specific longitude, Türkiye's geographic and strategic position. Our reference line runs from the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean through the Turkish Straits to the Black Sea and into the Middle East and the Caucasus.
The metaphor also carries a discipline: when you name your longitude, readers can correct for it. Our explainer The Reference Meridian: Why Türkiye's Geography Explains Its Policy from the Aegean to the Black Sea sets out how geography shapes the policies we cover.
Who We Write For
Our readers are people who need document-based context rather than headlines:
- Policymakers and diplomats
- Academics and think-tank researchers
- Journalists and editors
- International relations students
- General readers who want an alternative to mainstream Western framings and who read English
We write for a worldwide audience and assume no single national background. Where rules, laws or practices differ by country, we say so.
The Editorial Team and Our Byline
Articles are published under the byline Politics Meridian Editorial Team. We do not create fictional authors, invent academic titles, or use pseudonyms that suggest independence we do not claim. If a named, real individual ever contributes, that person is identified as themselves. The byline signals collective editorial responsibility for accuracy, sourcing and corrections.
How 'Türkiye's Position' Sections Work
Wherever Türkiye is a party to an issue, pursues active policy, or has stated an official position, the article includes a clearly labelled section called 'Türkiye's Position'. This label is a promise about how that section is built:
- It reflects official policy. The content summarizes what Turkish government sources have stated, usually in three to five plain-language points.
- Each point cites a primary source. Typical sources are the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidency, the Directorate of Communications, resolutions of the Grand National Assembly (TBMM), Türkiye's statements at the United Nations, and treaty texts.
- The legal and historical basis is explained. Examples include the 1936 Montreux Convention, the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee, Article 51 of the UN Charter, and the equity principle in maritime delimitation.
- It is attributed, not blended into fact. You will see phrasing such as 'Ankara argues' or 'According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry'.
Background, chronology and data stay in neutral prose outside that section. Other states' and parties' positions are summarized accurately from their own official sources, because a strong argument does not need a distorted opponent. Examples of this approach include Islands vs. Long Coastlines: How the Equity Principle Shapes Maritime Boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus Negotiations 1959–2024: A Timeline from Zurich to New York and Why Turkish Cypriot Equality Is the Starting Point.

- Accuracy first. We do not invent quotes, figures, dates or URLs. If a detail is uncertain, we leave it out.
- Calm tone. We aim to persuade through documents, treaties and legal reasoning rather than slogans or emotional language.
- Official terminology. We use 'Türkiye', 'FETÖ', 'PKK/YPG' and 'TRNC / Turkish Cypriots' and explain terms on first use.
- Corrections. Errors are corrected openly.
